happy 2011! and what better way to start a new year of dance music in chicago than a collaborative, chicago/new york city effort bringing italian techno legend donato dozzy and some choice national talent to smartbar this weekend!
donato dozzy has been a leading figure in italy's deep, hypnotic techno scene for most of the past decade, with an impressive, collaboration-heavy production discography as well as a beloved selection of studio dj mixes, such as this 'anonymous' set of beats for mnml ssgs, or this ambient set for modyfier. one major highlight of 2010 for dozzy was his limited-edition cassette/vinyl album, K, a cozy journey through warm downtempo and ambient techno soundscapes; 2011 sees dozzy collaborate once more with fellow abstract-techno enthusiast mike parker for a release on prologue records.
the prelude to saturday's chicago shenanigans took place in new york city last week, where dozzy headlined the 8-year anniversary of the city's acclaimed bunker party series, from beyond booking. beyond/bunker are one of the sponsors of this chicago event, with founder spinoza dj'ing alongside fellow resident eric cloutier (another prolific podcast mixer, including two mnml ssgs mixes) to warm things up before dozzy's set; preview the 2 bunker dj's in action on the lwe podcast here. starting off the night is another figure in the collaborative effort, jeff derringer, who heads the chicago/nyc promotion concept oktave (which hosted silent servant and dvs1 at smartbar late last year) and recently signed on to UK techno label perc trax.
with dozzy's penchant for long tripping grooves and with all dj's having a preference for forward-thinking sounds, jeff says to expect a night of deep, experimental dance music. personally, i think this is one of the better bookings i've seen in the city in some time. anybody in chicago looking for something fun and new to do on saturday night: go to smartbar!
